Awarded for his repeated successes across all the major theatres of the war, especially while serving as an assault expert in the fighting around Cassino. During this time, on the 21.03.1944, he led a counterattack during a crisis-laden time that helped to stabilize the German frontline. On the way back however he died while in the process of assisting one of his heavily wounded comrades.
