Awarded for his Bataillon’s successes during the second battle of Monte Cassino. During this battle they were one of the units charged with the defense of Monastery Hill, with their positions located on the slopes of the hill itself, from the Rocca Janula to Calvary Hill.

The Bataillon defeated an attack by the US 168th Infantry Regiment on the 11.02.1944. Later, on the evening of the 16.02.1944, the British Sussex battalion attacked with the same result. The next day, the Bataillon was one of the units defending against an attack by the whole 4th Indian division, and made an important contribution to crushing this latest assault as well.
