The following wartime excerpt describes why Bachmaier was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Hauptmann Bachmaier did an outstanding job of leading his Bataillon from the foremost line during the costly fighting to expand the Poltava bridgehead on the 19.09.1941 and the days that followed. He and his Bataillon were primarily responsible for establishing a crossing over the Kolomak river, which was an important achievement since the swampy terrain on the Worskla’s eastern bank complicated the deployment of additional forces. Hauptmann Bachmaier thus has a decisive share in the capture of Poltava itself as well as in the swift overcoming of the riverine/swampy terrain to the east of the city.”
