Helmut Banaski was awarded his Knight’s Cross for his actions during the bitter fighting of southeast Berlin. With only 250 men, Banaski counter-attacked a Soviet offensive. Their actions repulsed the Soviets and allowed the evacuation of a field hospital and the escape of thousands of refugees.
