Oberleutnant Birnbaum joined the army in 1934 and joined the Panzer Regiment 5 in 1939.
In November 1942, he was appointed to the Panzer Division "HG".
He earned the Knight's Cross in the Warka-Magnuszew bridgehead, where he managed to repell th enemy after heavy fighting.
In May 1945, he was US POW and released after a short period of imprisonment.
