The following press article (dated 14.02.1944) describes why Breithaupt was awarded the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross…

“The newest Oakleaves Holder of the Kriegsmarine, who was awarded the Knight’s Cross on the 03.08.1941, has participated in frontline operations since the beginning of the war and has particularly distinguished himself at numerous hotspots of the naval war. While serving as the chief of a Minensuchflottille he has operated in the English Channel and the northern French coast while in very immediate proximity to the enemy. In this context Breithaupt and his vessels have had a major share in the completion of missions assigned to the security forces of the Kriegsmarine operating within the area. Whilst serving amongst these security forces his Flottille has carried out both its designated role (the detection and elimination of enemy naval mines and mine barriers) as well as important special missions, in particular the escorting of important convoys, while under the exemplary leadership of its commander.”
