During the retreat battles of the 8. Jäger-Division from Lake Ilmen Oberwachtmeister Bürgel took over the direction of his Batterie’s fire missions after all its other officers had fallen out. He served in this role during the fighting between Novgorod and Pskov, and in this capacity he decisively influenced the course of operations in his Division’s area. For this he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
