Awarded for his actions between the Dnieper and Tschaussy rivers in early 1944. The following excerpt from the newspaper ‘Kreis Birkenfeld-Baumholder’ briefly describes why he won the Knight’s Cross…

“After the Schwadron commander fell out due to injury he took over the Schwadron, and with this unit he held an important hill for three days against much larger Russian forces. By doing so he prevented the enemy from thrusting into the flank of his Division, which in turn gave it the opportunity to reorder itself and occupy a new position.”

Over the course of this fighting Cullmann received a total of three wounds, however he remained with his men. He did not survive his fourth wound, which was sustained on the fourth day of combat.

A divisional situation map from the 27.03.1944 indicates that these actions took place on the left divisional boundary near the village of Krassniza (located southeast of Mogilev).
