Biography

Ioan Dumitrache was born in 1889. During the First World War he proved himself as a brave lieutenant and was wounded twice. When the war ended, Dumitrache was promoted to Major and placed with the headquarter of the 1st Romanian Mountain Division at Sinaia, in 1924. Between the both World Wars he gradually climbed the military ladder and finally reached the rank of Brigadier.

When the Rumanian forces invaded the USSR to reclaim the land the Soviets had invaded after the war in Poland, General Ioan Dumitrache crossed the Nistru River with the 3rd Romanian Army. His skills were admired by his own and the German Forces and respected by the Soviet enemy. In 1943 he was promoted to Major General and became the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Mountain Division. With the Soviet offensive in the Crimean during the spring of 1944 he was evacuated with his troops from Sevastopol. During the evacuation he delayed with his division the Soviet advance while the other troops were evacuated.

Back in Romania he was installed as commander of the complete Romanian Mountain Corps. After King Michael made the armistice with the Allied Forces, the Mountain Corps played a key role in the liberation of Transylvania, during the Romanian-Soviet offensive.

In 1947 he was retired and soon after that arrested under Soviet pressure, in 1950. After years of imprisonment he regained freedom and in 1977 he died near Brasov.
