Awarded for the outstanding leadership of his Division during the fighting on the northern sector of the Eastern front in early 1944. The Division was able to defeat all Soviet attempts at encirclement through flexible leadership, and it had a major role to play in the relatively smooth withdrawal to Lake Peipus. Generalleutnant Burdach and his Division were named in the Wehrmachtbericht in recognition of their accomplishments in this timeframe.
