During the late summer of 1942 Hauptmann Weiß and his Bataillon were assigned to defend a strategically important sector of railroad. On the 25.09.1942 he threw back far numerically superior Soviet forces in a bold counterthrust that he launched with two Zügen from his unit. In the process he was wounded through a shot through the left shoulder. For his successful and courageous actions on this day he would later be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
