The following wartime excerpt justifies the award of the Knight’s Cross to Oberleutnant von Flotow…

“The attitude of Oberleutnant von Flotow on the 08.07.1941 during the attack over the Welikaja river near Daschtschari was outstanding. The leadership had already decided to call off the attack for the day when Oberleutnant von Flotow (who was leading at the head of his Kompanie with small attached elements of the I./S.R. 8) succeeded in securing the crossing over the river for the 8. Panzer-Division. This action, achieved despite strong enemy fire and severe friendly losses, created the possibility for a bridgehead to be formed.”
