On the 15.10.1943 the 122. Infanterie-Division attacked Hill 180.3, a position located in the area north of Newel and south of the Karataj lake. The attack was a total success, pressing on beyond its objective to the line Karataj-Goruschki-Mikleschi-Southern edge of the Karataj lake. A Soviet division and brigade were largely destroyed, and a large amount of Soviet weaponry was captured. Generalleutnant Chill would later be awarded the Knight’s Cross for the role in played in bringing about this victory.
