"For gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on 3 January 1945, near Bastogne Belgium. On that date the battalion was attacking a wooded area and suffered heavy casualties from enemy artillery fire. Colonel Bottomly went forward on foot with the assault companies to lift the morale of his troops. Inspired by his presence among the lead troops, the entire battalion gained its objective and formed for further assault. At this time the enemy directed very heavy artillery fire on the battalion position, making further movement extremely difficult. Colonel Bottomly remained in forward position until his outpost companies were in well-selected positions and the flanks were secured. The courage and aggressive leadership displayed by Colonel Bottomly reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service."
