During the Second World War and the occupation a number of allied aircrew were buried in the cemetery of Roermond. Anja made it her business to tend the graves and the headstones. It is in recognition of her selfless devotion to this long task of care and commemoration, that Her Majesty of Great Britain, Queen Elizabeth, has appointed Anja van Leijssen an honorary MBE.

Received her MBE on thursday 6 April 2000 at the Royal Air Force Base at Brüggen by Dame Rosemary Spencer, th British Ambassador to the Netherlands.
