    Biography

    Italian of birth, Primo Gibelli was born in 1883 in Milan. He was one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party. In 1921 he became a citizen of the USSR. From 1922 he was a pilot in the Red Army. He joined the Escuadrilla Malraux during the Spanish Civil War, a Spanish Republican Squadron with the International Brigades, led by the French communist pilot Malraux. During uncertain circumstances he was killed during the Spanish Civil War. Uncertain is whether he was killed during an air battle, killed after torture by Republican or Nationalist forces. For his bravery he received the Soviet Hero of the Soviet Union.
