The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Gablenz received the Knight’s Cross…

“Generalleutnant Freiherr von Gablenz directed the fighting of his Division from the foremost line. Under his leadership his men broke the toughest of enemy resistance, established a bridgehead and held the latter against all hostile counterattacks. Later, as the enemy pulled back in the early morning, Generalleutnant von Gablenz personally launched an immediate pursuit with whatever combat-capable mobile units were available and thereby gave the neighbouring Division the impetus to do the same.”
