In the ensuing breakthrough battle between Saaralben and Püttlingen Straube, under enemy fire, was able to personally resolve a crisis in the battle and so permit the final crushing of the enemy bunker defenses and the final breakthrough. Through the skillful exploitation of these successes he facilitated a victorious outcome for the whole XII. Armeekorps. Furthermore, during a later battle on the Rhine-Marne Canal at Lagarde, Straube once again overcame a crisis and crushed the enemy defences along the canal.
