The following newspaper excerpt (dated 12.10.1941) describes why Schulz received the Knight’s Cross…

“Major Johannes Schulz has served as a Bataillon commander in an Infanterie-Regiment during the defensive war against the Soviet Union, and in this capacity he made the decision to advance against Salatschewa [?] on the 04.10.1941. After reaching this objective he continued thrusting forward to a point 4 kilometres behind the Soviet position. From here he and his troops eliminated significant elements of the fleeing Bolshevik forces, and were able to hold their ground against powerful Soviet counterthrusts despite being fully isolated themselves. In the course of this bitter combat he [Schulz] was badly wounded.”
