During the fighting in the Kuban bridgehead Oberleutnant Gollert-Hansen held an important hill with weak forces against an attack by strong elements of two Soviet rifle divisions after the Soviets had succeeded in pushing back the frontline of Romanian troops in the neighbouring sector. By this he secured the preconditions for a later successful recapture of the old Axis main defensive line. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
