Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub
Action:
Awarded for his achievements in the time period 24.03.-12.04.1945. During this time he and his regiment defeated numerous enemy breakthrough attempts at the critical points of the front west of Kisber, southeast of Raab and around Vienna. In particular, he distinguished himself in the battles at the Prater island, where he and his decimated regiment were able to hold off multiple strong enemy breakthrough attempts spearheaded by 3 rifle divisions and a mechanized corps. He proved to be the rock in the storm during these battles, always extorting his men forwards. In the five days of battle on the Prater island his Kampfgruppe destroyed 39 enemy tanks.
Details:
Non-formal awarding.
The recommendation to the Eichenlaub reached the OKH/PA/P 5 on April 15th, 1945 and was supported by SS-Obergruppenführer and General der Waffen-SS Bittrich as Kommandierender General II. SS-Panzerkorps and by the Oberbefehlshaber Heeresgruppe Süd Generaloberst Rendulic. It is most likely that the awarding was not processed anymore.
When the count of the awarding of the Eichenlaub was continued this would probably have been the 879th Award.
