Oberfeldwebel Tanneberger and his handful of Grenadiers thrust into a gap in the frontline that had formed between themselves and the neighbouring Bataillon, assaulting a Soviet column containing about 400 men. They were able to successfully destroy/disperse this hostile group, and for this action Tanneberger received the Knight's Cross.
