On the morning of the 23.04.1943, a large Allied armoured attack was launched east of Medjez. Through the actions of the 10. Panzer-Division, "Hermann Göring" Division and other German formations, 81 tanks were claimed as destroyed by the Germans. It was for actions on this day that Witte would receive the Knight's Cross. In a 90 second period he destroyed 9 allied tanks by himself as a Flak gunner from close range (as little as 50 yards).
