Awarded for his leadership of Korps Scheele during the desperate battles of Army Group South in early 1943. It was largely on his account that his corps was able to hold its front between the Don and the Donez during this time. Of special mention are the following actions…

1) The corps’ defensive victory on the Shisdra-Front near Pusanowka and Krestjanskaja Gora on 02.03.1943.

2) Clearing up an enemy breakthrough near Bukan via counterattack on 03.03.1943.

3) Destroying 60 enemy tanks on a single day before Aschkowo (07.03.1943).

During the battle of France Scheele led a battalion in a bold thrust from the Rhine-Marne canal to Nancy, and was able to swiftly capture the city and its undamaged bridge. In doing so it was possible to quickly link up with additional German troops advancing from the east and open the way for other formations of the Korps to strike into the rear of enemy forces in the area south of Toul. For his achievement here Scheele was awarded the Knight’s Cross.
