Georg Koßmala finally reached the rank of Generalmajor. He was reported missing in action since March 18th, 1945. At that moment he served as Kommandeur 344. Infanterie-Division.

Starting from when he occupied the Molwotizy position on the 16.01.1942 (in the Demyansk pocket), Oberst Koßmala and his men repelled numerous Soviet attacks against the pocket. On the 23.02.1942 Koßmala would be appointed commander of all German formations in the Molwotizy hedgehog position. With these he would hold his ground bitterly until finally being ordered by the Korps to pull back from the village on the 08.03.1942.

Koßmala would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross for his outstanding achievements amassed while defending this position.

Awarded for the command of his Regiment in early 1944. On the 23.01.1944 Oberst Koßmala took over the German Schimsk bridgehead, located west of Lake Ilmen. Numerous Soviet tanks were destroyed here on the 17.02.1944. Two days later Koßmala and his men began falling back to the Panther Line between Ostrov and Pskov. On the 29.02.1944 Grenadier-Regiment 6 was stationed right in the middle of the heavy fighting along the Panther Line, specifically the forward projecting German salient between Krasnaja Gorka and Nemojewo. Here the Regiment would distinguish itself, with its success being in large part due to the bravery and leadership of Oberst Koßmala.
