Donald Arnot and his crew were shot down by a night fighter on the return flight from a large bombing raid on Magdeburg.
Captain Arnot gave the command to abandon the aircraft. Tragically, before the crew could bale out, the aircraft exploded in mid air killing all on board except for P/O. Thom who was blown clear and captured near Köthen, spending the remainder of the war as a PoW.
