Action:
On 09.04.1944 a Soviet cavalry brigade with tank support brushed past weak German rearguard forces and thrust towards Owidiopol, where the retreating German units were packed in front of the only local crossing over the Dniester river. As the Soviets approached the crossing point, Major Streit gathered up all available combat troops and formed a blocking position in front of the city. Despite a lack of heavy weapons they were able to hold the Soviets at bay here and thus thwart their efforts to interfere with the withdrawal of German men and equipment over the river. Furthermore, 20 enemy tanks were destroyed in close combat. For his decisive actions here Streit was decorated with the Knight's Cross.
