On the 02.09.1942 21 Soviet tanks thrusted into the deep rear of the 1. Panzer-Division, at the time located in the Rzhev area. Near Maschutino Oberleutnant Gilow launched a counterattack own his own initiative with 7 Panzers. Manoeuvring from the flank and rear, the enemy was broken within 10 minutes, and Gilow’s Panzers destroyed 11 of the enemy tanks.

After this a new wave of enemy armour launched itself against the north flank of the 1. Panzer-Division. The 2. Kompanie came to the rescue from its positions at Maschutino, and destroyed a number of enemy tanks. Oberleutnant Gilow personally destroyed 7 of these.

Gilow would receive the Knight’s Cross for the personal and collective successes seen here. By the end of this battle his Kompanie had destroyed its 150th tank.
