Awarded the Knight’s Cross for his actions in Italy during late May 1943. In this time he formed an assault party consisting of 80 men and led it in the direction of the de Vibaro homestead. They fought through the opposition and reached Hill 931, where defending Allied forces were forced pull back from the high ground of the ridge. The German artillery bombarded the Allied positions here and then, after the barrage had ended, Gosewisch and his 3 assault teams moved in. Moving swiftly, they pushed into the midst of the defending Allied troops and forced them to scatter. 21 men were captured and 40 dead counted in the vicinity of the farm. Gosewisch would be recognized for this achievement appropriately.
