Biography

James Aurness, better known as James Arness became especially known by his role as Marshall Matt Dillon in the televisionseries Gunsmoke.
James King Aurness was born in Minneapolis on May 26th, 1923, the son of Rolf Cirkler Aurness and Ruth Aurness-Duesler.
During world war two, Aurness served with the 3rd Infantry at Anzio in Italy and was wounded on May 26th, while wading ashore. He remained in hospital until his honorable discharge on Janaury 29th, 1945.
After world war two he commenced working as a radio reporter. In 1947, after having moved to Los Angeles, he played his first role in a movie and changed his name to James Arness. Later on had roles in, among others, Gunsmoke and How the West was won.
James Arness passed away June 3rd, 2011.
