Awarded for his personal achievements and his Gruppe’s overall success during the spring of 1941. Hoffmann personally bombed and knocked out the headquarters of the Yugoslavian Army’s high command. During May 1941 he and his unit experienced enormous success in the anti-shipping role in the Mediterranean. The Gruppe was credited with 257000 GRT of shipping sunk and another 276000 GRT damaged, as well as a cruiser and destroyer sunk.
