The following press article, dated 31.01.1943, describes why Hülsmann would receive the Knight’s Cross…

“Unteroffizier Bernhard Hülsmann has repeatedly distinguished himself on the Eastern front through outstanding bravery. Deployed with his gun in the thick of the heavy defensive battles south of Rzhev, he has destroyed 16 heavy tanks in seven days of fighting and contributed significantly to the defense against the Soviet onslaught by the damage he wrought on the enemy assault waves. In total he has destroyed 25 tanks.”
