During this time, as the Division was retreating to Lithuania, a Soviet penetration near the village of Kuktiskes creating a major crisis. The German infantry, exhausted, understrength and hard-pressed by enemy tanks, fell back and the integrity of the entire Korps frontline was thrown into question.

However the arrival of Oberleutnant Höring and his Sturmgeschütze brought new hope when they began to destroy the first T-34s. Now seeing that something could be done about the enemy armour, the German infantry were inspired to join Höring’s counterthrust. After a short fight that brought bloody losses to both sides, the situation was stabilized. The 252. Infanterie-Division would pen a Knight’s Cross recommendation for Oberleutnant Höring in recognition of his efforts here.
