Biography

William was born on October 22 1913 in Calgary, the son of James Stark (Scottish and deceased in 1932 of war disability) and Agnes Stark nee Dahl (Norwegian) of Calgary. Agnes remarried later as Mrs. Holt.

He was married on October 2 1937 in Calgary with Marie Ann Stark nee Tronson of Calgary and their son was Garry James Stark (1940). His brother was Raymond Stark.

He was a butcher and member of the Roman Catholic Church. His sports were hockey, swimming and baseball.
He enlisted on February 24 1942 in Calgary and he went on July 30 1942 thereafter overseas to the UK.

William was killed on action on Thursday December 17 1942 age 29 due to a crash at the village of Harich near Balk, province of Friesland before or after an attack on Nienburg in Germany. He was temporarily buried then in Ypecolsga (province of Friesland) before being reburied on June 19 1952 at the Jonkerbos War Cemetery.

The other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew member Sgt Gordon B. Wilkinson was buried then in Ypecolsga in grave E-11 as well as the other fallen RAAF crew member F/Sgt Edward Croal age 27 in grave E-10.
The other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew members were buried later at the Jonkerbos War Cemetery: F/O Maurice A. Nias age 24 in grave 20-I-3 and Sgt Leonard G. Powell age 31 in grave 20-I-4.
The fallen RAAF crew member and also buried later at the Jonkerbos War Cemetery was F/Sgt John G. Dening age 27 in grave 20-I-1 as well as the other RAF crew member Sgt John A. Callan age 23 in grave 20-I-2.

He is mentioned with the other fallen crew members at a monument near Ypecolsga, Woudsend.

He served as Flight Sergeant with the 44 (R.A.F.) Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force.
