On the 13.08.1941 Hupfer led a Vorausabteilung forwards against Trichaty, with the aim of seizing the crossing over the Bug located there. In spite of the strong, organized Soviet resistance he managed to break into Trichaty during the afternoon following an engagement that lasted about half the day. The day’s booty amounted to about 500 prisoners, 30 guns, 1000 horses and much additional materiel. Hauptmann Hupfer would receive the Knight’s Cross for this success.

During the fighting in the west Caucasus Hauptmann Hupfer and his Bataillon stormed a hill that was heavily fortified with field positions and bunkers. Despite the seeming impossibility of the task, Hupfer and his men proved to be formidable fighters. They cleared out 20 Soviet bunkers and were able to bring the hotly contested hill into German hands, which was of great importance for the continued fighting in the area. Hupfer would be awarded the Oakleaves for this act.
