Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Sergeant-Major
Unit:
2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, 17th Infantry Brigade, 5th Infantry Division, British Army
Awarded on:
October 21st, 1943
"This officer commanded the right column of 17 Infantry Brigade's two columns advancing from GEORGE Beach on SYRACUSE on July 10.
He displayed great personal gallantry throughout the operation and it was chiefly through his determination, dash and personal leadership that his column made such remarkable progress throughout the day, capturing enemy posts after post in rapid succession.
The capture of SYRACUSE on the day of landing was due in large measure to this officer."
"I quite agree. Throughout the whole of the July he showed great (...) and personal courage, going forward on every occasion when the leading troops were hold up. It was almost (unreadable/crossed out) to his initiative and (unreadable/crossed out) that SYRACUSE was taken on D-Day."
Distinguished Service Order (DSO)
