Awarded for his actions during the German relief of Kovel in early 1944. On the 04.04.1944 the II./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 12 was able to advance as far as the railway embankment near Koszary. During this attack Unteroffizier Kohl and a small team of men were able to take a bunker, which held 5 anti-tank guns, in a surprise attack. For this act he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
