Hubert Schmundt joined the Imperial German Navy in 1908 and served during World War I, primarily on torpedo boats. After the war, he remained in the navy and rose through the ranks during the interwar period. By the time World War II began, Schmundt had become a prominent figure in the Kriegsmarine. He commanded naval forces during the invasion of Norway in 1940 and later held various leadership roles, including overseeing naval operations in the Baltic Sea. He retired from active service in 1944.
