Biography

Armond joined the in 43 at Camp Lee and then went onto the paratroops. Again as a scout (7761), he would have likely been part of the S-2 (Intelligence) Section of 1st Battalion's Headquarters.

Armond took part in the three major campaigns (Normandy, Holland, Bastogne):

Normandy – D-Day, 6 June 1944: This was a parachute assault. The 506th took part in combat operations from the 6th until the 29th of June when the bulk of the Regiment was withdrawn by ships and sent back to England.

Holland – 17 September 1944: This was a parachute assault as well. The 506th took part in combat operations until 28 November 1944. Armond was wounded on 6 October 1944. He was likely sent back to England to recuperate from his wounds.

Bastogne - 17 December 1944. The 506th boarded trucks and cattle cars and was driven from their base in Mourmelon, France to the outskirts of Bastogne. There they debarked from the trucks on 19 December and marched towards their positions around the city. The 506th took part in combat operations from 19 December 1944 to 19 January 1945. Armond was wounded on the day the Regiment arrived at Bastogne and was captured along with the other wounded and staff of the 326th Medical Battalion field hospital. He was a POW until sometime in the middle of February 1945, when his Stalag was liberated by the Russians. He traveled along with the Soviets until they reached American lines. The first time Americans and Russians made contact was 25 April 1945.

From the Honorable Discharge 20 October 1945:
1. Notes from front side Honorable Discharge 20 October 1945, Fort Benning Georgia: Enl in grade of Pfc to serve three (3) years in the Regular Army; AFICES, Roanoke, VA 4 Oct 1946; E. R. Guhl, 2ndLt., FA, Asst Adjutant; P M Bernstein, Major, Infantry.
This indicates that after Armond was discharged in 1945, he reenlisted in the Army in 1946 for 3 three years. While the officer that reenlisted him was a Field Artillery officer, it does not mean that Armond went into the artillery military occupational specialty (MOS). Based on section 5 below, he rejoined and became a mechanic.
