The following wartime excerpt describes why Schröder received the Knight’s Cross…

“Feldwebel Hans-Erwin Schröder… received the Knight’s Cross on the 04.12.1941. At the beginning of November 1941, during the heavy fighting in the northern sector of the eastern front, he had destroyed 5 of 11 attacking tanks whilst serving as a gun commander in a Panzerjäger-Abteilung. A few days later he destroyed a further 2. His brave conduct here was very important for the defense against these Bolshevik attacks.”
