On 09.09.1941 Gefreiter Stöckert and a comrade were operating with a platoon-strength German reconnaissance patrol, which was deployed to the Dnieper island southwest of Mykolaiv. As the two men stood ready on the German side of the river, they suddenly spotted ten enemy boats. The friendly reconnaissance patrol had still not returned and was thus was in danger of being cut off.

Without orders, Stöckert and his comrade jumped into a boat and rowed over to the opposite bank under heavy enemy fire. Once there they took up position with the MG they had brought over and took up covering positions, holding their ground until the friendly reconnaissance patrol had made it to the other side.

By their actions they enabled the patrol to not only escape, but also bring back 30 enemy prisoners along with valuable intelligence. This translated into valuable information for the higher commands on the enemy's strength and composition in the area. In recognition of this achievement Stöckert was recommended for and received the Knight's Cross.
