"As wireless operator, this airman has participated in a large number of sorties, involving attacks on important enemy targets. He has displayed great skill and devotion to duty and proved himself to be a most reliable member of aircraft crew. On one occasion, during an attack on Hamburg in July, 1943, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and sustained damage. The flight engineer became unconscious through lack of oxygen. Displaying commendable promptitude, Flight Sergeant Stoneley went to his assistance and, in spite of great difficulty, succeeded in reviving him. His example in harassing circumstances proved most encouraging."
