Promoted to Adjutant in October 1941, he took part in the operations of Libya in January 1942, and distinguished himself at the Battle of Bir-Hakeim; on the night of June 10th, 1942, when he was forced to leave the scene, he loaded a comrade blinded by a bullet on his back and carried him away from the enemy lines. He then returns in full barrage of fire to look for another comrade wounded to put it also out of reach.
