Biography

Sergeant of Infantry Pieter Stapenséa was commander of a POA (Armoured Car), armed with two Colt machine guns, which was part of a unit under command of 1st Lieutenant of Infantry KNIL D.H. Been, who was ordered on March 12th, 1942, to defend the bridge over the river Asahan near Porsea, Sumatra. The unit, consisting of two infantry brigades, a section Fiat machineguns and 2 POA's were forced to retreat by the Japanese offence. During the battles in the days that followed, on March 23rd, 1942, Pieter Stapenséa was killed in action.
