Awarded for his outstanding contributions to the battles around Rostov, Krassnodar, Noworossisk, Izyum and Belgorord. Throughout these battles he became a specialist in using Flak in the AT defense role, destroying 15 enemy tanks with his Batterie around Belgorod alone. Here he would be badly wounded while sitting in the gunner’s seat. By the time of his award of the Knight’s Cross he had personally destroyed 19 enemy tanks.
