During 1943 Oberleutnant Hampl was standing by as a reserve with his Kompanie south of Lake Ladoga when Soviet forces succeeded in penetrating onto commanding piece of high ground. Responding on his own initiative, Hampl led his men through a minefield and then launched a counterattack which succeeded in throwing the Soviets back and recapturing the trenches in the area. The Soviets lost 200 dead in this battle. Hampl would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this risky yet ultimately successful action.
