The following wartime excerpt describes why Müller received the Knight’s Cross…

“Feldwebel Alfred Müller… received the Knight’s Cross on the 08.05.1943 while serving as a Zugführer in a Rhine Grenadier-Regiment. During a counterattack north of Orel his Kompanie commander became a casualty amidst the fierce Soviet defensive fire, and so the whole counterattack threatened to stall. In this situation Müller took over command of the Kompanie on his own initiative and inspired the Grenadiers forwards by devoting himself fully to the fight.”
