The following wartime excerpt describes why Zahn received the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberfeldwebel Willi Zahn… was awarded the Knight’s Cross on the 18.07.1943 following his heroic death. Whilst serving as a Zugführer in a Grenadier-Regiment he destroyed 7 of 30 attacking T-34 tanks with just a single Pak gun. By doing so he prevented a penetration by strong enemy infantry and tank forces.”
