The following newspaper excerpt (dated 25.09.1942) describes why Weinbuch received the Knight’s Cross…

“Knight’s Cross Holder Weinbuch Dead - Repulsed Attacks Despite Being Wounded:

Oberwachtmeister and Knight’s Cross Holder Georg Weinbuch has succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained in the hard fighting souther of Kharkov during the middle of May.

At the time he directed the fire of friendly artillery whilst serving as a forward observer under fierce enemy bombardment himself. During the battle he and his radio operators drove straight through Bolshevik forces on a sidecar motorcycle in order to reach a hotly contested village. Here he continued to direct friendly artillery fire despite being badly wounded himself by this time. His grim resolve was a major factor that contributed to the defeat of the enemy attacks in this heavily endangered sector.”
