The following newspaper excerpt (dated 23.11.1943) describes why Weiß received the Knight’s Cross…

“Feldwebel Georg Weiß… decided to use his squad of Bavarian Grenadiers to launch a counterthrust against enemy forces that had thrust into the flank of his Bataillon (which was itself fighting in the area east of Gomel at the time). After this he held his ground for six full hours with only 2 combat-capable Grenadiers at his disposal, and in the end the Soviets were forced to call off their attack after they had lost over 80 dead.”
